Unit: Momentum

Central Concept-Forces and Interactions:The momentum of an object is defined as its mass times its velocity. For any system of interacting objects, the total momentum within the system changes only due to transfer of momentum into or out of the system.  Within an isolated system, the total momentum of the system stays the same within an external force.

Cross Cutting Concept-Systems and system models:  By defining the boundaries of a system, it provides tools for understanding and testing ideas that are applicable throughout science and engineering.

Science and Engineering Practices-Analyzing and interpreting data: After data has been collected, it must be analyzed in order to derive meaning. This allows scientists and engineers to identify significant features and patterns in the data, which can lead to drawing conclusions and possible solutions.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this unit, you should be able to.... (Those in bold will be essential & will be assessed formally in the curriculum)

1.

Identify appropriate standard international units of measurement for mass (Kg), velocity (m/s), and momentum (Kgm/s)

2.

Perform calculations relating to an object’s momentum, velocity, mass.

3.
Identify an isolated system.
4.

Explain conservation laws for mass and momentum.

5.

Solve problems involving collision and explosions of isolated system.

6.

Use the concept of a system to find the momentum, speed, or mass of objects in the system.

7.

Challenge: Be able to describe and explain when a change in the system has occurred and resulted in change of momentum (impulse).

 Vocabulary:

hypothesis mass velocity
conservation momentum
elastic collision inelastic collision
explosion impulse conservation of momentum
system isolated
