Unit: Waves

Moodle Website: http://npsacademic.newton.k12.ma.us/login/index.php

Objectives:

This seems like a completely new topic, but it actually has important connections to the electromagnetism material you've just completed and the motion work you did early in the school year.Waves are a way to transport energy without transporting mass.

  • Distinguish between wave motion and the motion of objects. Recognize examples of simple harmonic motion.
  • Recognize the measurable properties of waves (e.g., velocity, frequency, period, wavelength, amplitude) and explain the relationships among them.
  • Distinguish between transverse and longitudinal waves. Identify parts of a wave (ex: crest, compression)
  • Recognize that mechanical waves generally move faster through a solid than through a liquid, and faster through a liquid than through a gas.
  • Describe the apparent change in frequency of waves due to the motion of a source or a receiver (the Doppler effect).
