Unit: Magnetism

Objectives:

•    Describe magnetic fields in terms of compass direction, and predict their effects on magnets, including compass needles. Apply the magnetic field concept to small magnets, and also the Earth’s magnetic field.

•    Use the domain model to explain and predict the properties of magnets (such as poles; breaking magnets; magnetic and nonmagnetic materials; magnetizing and demagnetizing). Distinguish between electric charges and magnets.

•    Recognize that moving electric charges produce magnetic forces and moving magnets produce electric forces. Recognize that the interplay of electric and magnetic forces is the basis of electric motors, generators, and other technologies.
