Unit: Heat (Specific Heat Capacity, Phase Change)

Spec. Heat Capacity objectives:

  • Define and use the units of heat energy (calories and kilocalories), and relate these to other forms of energy, and to power.
  • Make calculations relating the temperature change in a substance (DT), the amount of heat transferred (Q), the amount of the substance (m), and the specific heat of the substance (c).
  • Describe how water’s high specific heat capacity affects climate.

Phase Change objectives:

  • Predict the phase of a material based on its temperature, and its melting and boiling points.
  • Relate a temperature-time graph for a substance to the phases (solid, liquid, gas) of the substance and its boiling and melting points.
  • Relate energy to changes of phase, using appropriate vocabulary for phase changes (melting, boiling, freezing, condensing, subliming).
